This means nearly 1 in 10 people globally, equivalent to twice the population of the United States, lack access to clean water. The majority reside in isolated rural areas, dedicating hours each day to collecting water for their families. This heavy burden keeps children out of school and prevents parents from earning an income. Worse, the water they gather is often unsafe, leading to illnesses that impact entire families.
We collaborate with local experts and community members to identify the most sustainable solution for each location we serve, whether it’s a well, a piped system, a BioSand Filter, or a rainwater harvesting system. With every water project we fund, our partners also provide sanitation and hygiene training and establish a local Water Committee to ensure the water systems remain functional for years to come.
Daily, women and girls globally spend approximately 200 million hours fetching water.
Contaminated water-related illnesses claim more lives annually than all acts of violence combined, even surpassing deaths caused by war.
Access to clean water helps ensure children stay in school, particularly girls.
In 80% of households where water must be collected from outside the home, the task falls primarily on women and girls
